We are thrilled to welcome back English Touring Opera for a live performance this Autumn, with a programme focussing on the voice of the individual in isolation through the power of song and poetry.
Songs and Proverbs of William Blake (Britten)
Julien van Mellaerts − Singer
Ella O’Neill − Pianist
John Savournin − Director
The visionary poet William Blake inspired many composers, none more so than Benjamin Britten. This song cycle draws a blazing picture of the innocence and injustice Blake saw around him. Sung by Cardiff Singer of the World 2019 finalist, Julien van Mellaerts.
Romances on English Poetry (Shostakovich)
Edward Hawkins − Singer
Sergey Rybin − Pianist
James Conway − Director
Dimitri Shostakovich’s brooding settings of Robert Burns, Shakespeare and Raleigh reveal the composer’s deep feelings about life, caught in the midst of World War Two. Edward Hawkins (bass) is the voice of a man who awaits the midnight call of his killer, in a world in which beauty is crushed as soon as it is found.
The Poet’s Echo (Britten)
Jenny Stafford − Singer
Sergey Rybin − Pianist
James Conway − Director
Britten’s astonishing setting of the Russian poet Pushkin is rarely performed. Directed by James Conway, Jenny Stafford is the soloist in this haunting work, sung in the original Russian.
