FestQ FRINGE: What roles can cinema play in post-conflict societies?

This discussion will raise questions around the ways that cinema and screen cultures can facilitate understandings of local experiences of political violence.
The collective project of the panellists, 'Screening Violence: a Transnational Study of the Local Imaginaries of Post-conflict', is in the early stages of development, and this session will be used to share initial findings and ask questions with a fresh and diverse audience. The panellists have so far been considering the social imaginaries of war and peace that are cultivated at a local level in Colombia, Chile, Northern Ireland, Algeria and Indonesia. This comparative study of experiences that are vastly different will not only enable the specificity of these local imaginaries to be retrieved, but also feed into a broader conceptual reflection upon the role of culture in the construction, reproduction and negotiation of the conflicts.
