FitkinWall: Harpland

FitkinWall: Harpland

Concerts

Internationally renowned harp and electronica duo FitkinWall return to Lancaster for the first time since 2011 for a special evening featuring harpist Ruth Wall, composer Graham Fitkin and a bespoke light installation from acclaimed artist Peter Freeman.

Harpland explores themes of migration, loss and longing referencing the Highland Clearances and builds upon the folk traditions of Gaelic song, fiddle and pipe tunes. Graham has created enigmatic and mesmerising new versions of these tunes for Ruth’s three harps - the sitar-like Renaissance bray harp, the beautiful medieval Gaelic wire harp (clàrsach) and the Scottish lever harp. FitkinWall combine ancient aural sources with modern technology, conjuring up captivating and intricate patterns on these unique instruments.

FitkinWall have performed around the world – from the Royal Albert Hall, BBC Proms, Aldeburgh and Glastonbury Festivals to Spiral Hall Tokyo, Aula Magna. Peter Freeman makes light sculptures and light installations in many forms to create positive, colourful, and uplifting ambiences.

“Graham Fitkin and harpist Ruth Wall conjured a haunting sense of longing and loss, wringing contemporary resonance from traditional tunes”
