The bird a nest, the spider a web, (hu)man friendship”
William Blake

Can we build a nest of belonging, together?

Join artist Henna Asikainen to explore feelings of belonging or unbelonging by working together to build a human sized nest in the Peter Scott Gallery as part of her new exhibition, Lintukoto / Haven. The nest will remain in the gallery throughout the exhibition.

An array of natural and manmade materials will be provided, but you are invited to bring any fabrics, scraps or materials that reflect you own experiences of belonging to contribute to the nest. This is a drop-in activity so come along at any time and stay as long as you wish. Children should be accompanied by an adult.

Lintukoto is an idea from Finnish mythology: a warm, safe haven located at the far edge of the world where sky and earth meet. A paradise-like, mythical place where birds migrate to spend the cold winter season.

Inspired by birds rebuilding their homes in new places with materials available locally, Henna invites you to take part in a collective act of building together, offering a space to reflect on the many dimensions of belonging, creating a human-size nest within the gallery.

The exhibition will also be a space to share stories of movement, migration, and making home– come and share yours, however long or short the distance travelled.

Henna is a Finnish artist based in the UK. Her artwork is concerned with humans’ complex relationship with nature and its intersections with social justice, climate justice, migration and notions of belonging. Her project has been supported by Arts Council England and the Finnish Institute.
