Join us as we celebrate four new works by Manchester-based artist Jez Dolan joining the university art collection. These quietly-impactful works draw on the personal and the political, bringing together Queer history and lived experience. Created using a variety of print-making techniques, they explore memories, history, and an inherited tradition of Queer creativity including artists Derek Jarman and Keith Vaughan.
This acquisition, made possible by the Peter Scott Gallery Charitable Trust, reflects a commitment to continue building the collection through acquiring exciting contemporary work that both resonates with and extends the existing rich collection, introducing previously under-represented perspectives.
Jez has worked with Lancaster Arts over a number of years, including bringing a hot tub into the gallery as part of a residency, and working with Garth Gratrix to develop ‘How do you make a Queer ritual?’, an exhibition in response to our 2023 annual theme. For this display, his works are shown alongside existing collection works which speak to the artist’s inspirations and collaborations, including works by Garth Gratrix, Emmanuel Cooper and Keith Vaughan.
On 13 May, 6-8pm, Jez and Polari expert Prof Paul Baker will host a conversation and workshop, inviting you to create your own responses to coded Queer history (booking available soon).
