José García Oliva: Out of Hours

José García Oliva: Out of Hours

Exhibitions

Immerse yourself in an original collaboration between artist José García Oliva and the dedicated cleaners, porters and security staff of Lancaster University. Developed over a period of four years, this reflective showcase challenges established ideas around the recognition of labour, with a nuanced exploration of stereotypes and hierarchical structures.

Out of Hours serves as a space for collective introspection and exchange on solidarity, shared memories and alternative modes of creation. Through personal narratives and playful creative expressions, it unveils the imprints of labour. We invite you to reflect upon the subtle yet powerful dynamics between identity, community, and the often-unnoticed contributions that shape our shared existence. Please join us in this thought-provoking encounter through art.

José García Oliva is a Venezuelan research-based artist living in London. Out of Hours builds on Jose’s previous Lancaster Arts commission, Traces, made in collaboration with the cleaning staff of Lancaster University’s library.

The gallery is open weekdays 11am-5pm. Please be aware the gallery will be closed on bank holiday Monday 6 May.

Join us on Wednesday 1 May in the gallery to celebrate International Workers' Day with a relaxed social event, including the chance to meet José and specially selected music by cleaner and DJ Stephan Smith. Please book your free place here.
