Inspired by the current Queering the Collection display, join us in the Peter Scott Gallery for insightful conversation and practical art making. Jez Dolan, whose art works have recently been added to the gallery collection, will be joined by Lancaster University academic Prof Paul Baker.
Jez and Paul share a fascination with Polari, a coded language used in a variety of subcultures including in the theatre and amongst gay men. Paul’s research on the origins and influences on Polari helped inform Jez’s artwork, and in turn, Paul interviewed Jez as part of the process of researching Fabulosa, his popular history of Polari which explores not only its origins and decline but its current usages – including among artists.
This session will include an opportunity to participate in a conversation with Jez and Paul exploring Polari, queer identity and history, and its role in art making. We’ll also be introduced to some Polari words and phrases and have a go at using them to create unique prints to take away.
